Review Article of Halpern, From Gods to God

A number of Baruch Halpern's essays have recently been collected together in one volume: From Gods to God: The Dynamics of Iron Age Cosmologies (FAT, 63; Tübingen: Mohr Siebeck, 2008). Written with verve, wit and erudition, this is an impressive set of studies that profitably cross numerous disciplinary boundaries. Not only does this volume helpfully bring together essays published in disparate contexts, but it also allows the reader to gain a vision of Halpern's overall understanding of the historical developments in the late Iron Age. The title rather nicely summarizes Halpern's long-standing concern to plot the development from Gods to God. This larger vision is filled with problems which I seek to explore in a review article
